Bible - Biblical Choices
The year begins at the Creation and works through the familiar stories and major characters of the Old Testament. The rest of the year focuses on the Life of Jesus. This engaging Bible curriculum includes scripture memorization, stories, visuals, hands-on activities, skits, crafts, songs, and life applications. The children pray daily for each other, and offer prayers for their families, communities, and the world.
Phonics, Reading and Spelling - A Beka
Throughout the course of the year, first-graders will review and learn short and long vowel sounds, rhyming words, compound words, sentences versus phrases, syllables, contractions, root words, alphabetical order, prefixes, changing ‘y’ to ‘i’ before adding suffixes, syllable word division, and homonyms. They will work through A Beka charts 6-13 by the end of the year, and will read up to A Beka grade level 1.8 books with 90% comprehension.
Handwriting - A Beka
First graders begin the year with a review of printing their first names. By the end of the year, after extensive daily drills and practice, they will be able to write words and sentences neatly, create stories following a story line, and write story titles.
Science - Bob Jones Univeristy Press
The science text God’s World is a simple, exciting introduction to God’s universe and God’s plan for the children’s lives. The text units include the senses; teeth; sun, moon, and stars; pushes and pulls; roots, stems, and leaves; matter; heat; and air temperature and movement. In January, the first-graders research and present a class Science Fair project.
History/Social Studies - A Beka
The History curriculum teaches students about the heritage of America, its flag, freedom, symbols, and great people. Children learn the patriotic songs, landmarks, and traditions of our country. Study then moves to various countries of the world, taking a look at their cultures and traditions.
Arithmetic - A Beka
Students will learn to use the concepts of math in daily problem solving. They learn to count forward and backward to 200 by ones, twos, fives, and tens; to understand place value concepts of greater than and less than; to add and subtract facts up to 12; they solve and illustrate story problems; draw geometric shapes, and complete bar graphs; they count pennies, dimes, quarters
and half dollars; and learn the basics of fractions.
Computer - University Technology Partnership
Over the course of the year, first-graders are introduced to age appropriate levels of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Publisher, and Power Point. The regular classroom teacher provides projects based on the students’ curriculum, which is then integrated into the four technology programs. Student work with the world-wide web and web pages emphasizes internet safety.
Spanish
Bi-weekly Spanish classes cover topics including introductions and greetings, colors, numbers one to twenty, objects in the classroom, food words, parts of the face, family, and the alphabet.
Art - A Beka
Students learn the basic concepts of art through a variety of art and craft projects. Month-to-month projects include coloring, painting, tracing, cutting, drawing, and gluing. Our art projects correlate with academics, Bible teaching, and the changes and holidays that come with the seasons.
