Bible - Biblical Choices
Topics covered include the Israelites in Egypt, the 10 plagues, the life and death of Moses, Passover, the 10 Commandments, Joshua, the Promised Land, the Life of Jesus, loving God and others, freedom of worship, prayer, and serving others.
Phonics/Language - A Beka
Students will learn topics including rhyming words, syllables and their accents, root words and suffixes, compound words, alphabetical order, punctuation, contractions, abbreviations, capitalization, word division and types of sentences. They will understand journaling and creative writing using the three types of sentences.
History/Geography - A Beka
The focus is America: our flag, freedoms, patriotic holidays and songs. Also studied will be the Separatists, Indians, Colonists, pioneers, cowboys, and new Americans. Geography covers continents, oceans, colonies, states, and historical significance of the Great Lakes, Rocky Mountains, and Mississippi river.
Spelling - A Beka
Weekly spelling tests focus on specific phonetic or language patterns. List 3 includes the words bless, plate, blond, float, and please. List 31 later in the year includes the words written, wrinkle, Creator, explore and business. Top spellers from each grade compete in the annual ACSI Spelling Bee.
Spanish
Bi-weekly Spanish classes cover topics including basic expressions, the alphabet, numbers 0-50, colors, pronouns, days of the week, parts of the body, the family, and an introduction to adjectives.
Math - A Beka
Instruction includes place value, counting in multiples, adding/subtracting up to 4-digit numbers, geometry, logical thinking, money counting and change-making, roman numerals, graphs, calendar and time, maps, thermometers, multiplication and division up to table 5, solving story problems, and telling time to the minute.
Science - Bob Jones University
Studies cover history, movement, layers and location of the Earth, oceans, gravity, magnetism, friction, mechanical force, light and shadow, living and non-living things, bones and muscles, and laws of motion. Second graders design and submit a class project in the school’s annual Science Fair in January.
Computer - University Technology Partnership
Over the course of the year, second graders are introduced to age appropriate levels of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Publisher, and Power Point. The regular classroom teacher provides projects based on the students’ curriculum, which is then integrated into the four technology programs. Study of the world-wide web and web pages emphasizes internet safety.
Penmanship
Detailed teaching of the cursive letters and numbers is done. Homework and in-class work is completed in cursive.
Art - A Beka and Evan-Moor Publications
Students focus on drawing, painting, and creating unique projects out of paper. They also study depth, and take a deeper look at lines and the way and directions in which they move. The curriculum covers the color wheel, how to blend colors, and the concept of warm and cool, complementary and contrasting colors. Drawing in perspective is introduced.
