Bible - Biblical Choices
Each day begins with a word of prayer and Bible class. In the first semester students learn the book of Judges to 1 Samuel. Second semester students will learn the last week of Jesus’ life to the start of the Christian church in Acts.
English - Bob Jones University
Starting in third grade, students are no longer learning to read, but reading to learn. Phonics is replaced with the first year of English. English teaches children the basics of capitalization, punctuation, plurals, and most parts of speech. Students will apply these lessons to creative writing.
History/Geography - A Beka
The second semester covers history. History takes students on an adventure through famous Americans who helped build our country. Students begin having weekly quizzes, and they also complete worksheets to strengthen map skills.
Penmanship
Third graders write out a penmanship page daily. Each page focuses on a certain letter or penmanship skill. There is a weekly test to determine the student’s mastery of proper cursive writing. In the fourth quarter students are allowed to begin using pen.
Spelling - A Beka
Students are given a weekly spelling list. Each spelling list also contains three vocabulary words, to give students practice with definitions. There are activities, instruction, and homework so students can master their words; and a trial test is given the day before the actual test. In November, the top three spellers compete in the regional FACCS Spelling Bee.
Science - Bob Jones University
Science is covered in the first half of the school year with a heavy emphasis on animals. Students have an exciting interactive experience with each lesson as they learn about topics such as plants, sound, cells, and rocks. In February, all third graders research and submit individual projects to the school Science Fair.
Math - A Beka
The major focus of third grade arithmetic is multiplication and division tables. Students will also learn to solve multi-step story problems and measurement problems. There are weekly tests and daily drills to sharpen students’ skills.
Computer - University Technology Partenership
Over the course of the year, kindergarteners are introduced to age appropriate levels of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Publisher, and Power Point. The regular classroom teacher provides projects based on the students’ curriculum, which is then integrated into the four technology programs. Student introduction to the worldwide web and web pages emphasizes internet safety.
Spanish
Bi-weekly Spanish classes cover topics including basic expressions, the alphabet, numbers 0-60, colors, clothing, gender, parts of the body/face, emotions, singular/plural, family names, commands, verbs, and adjectives.
Art - A Beka
Students focus on drawing, painting, and creating unique projects out of paper. They also study depth, and take a deeper look at lines and the way and directions in which they move. The curriculum covers the color wheel, how to blend colors, and the concept of warm and cool, complementary and contrasting colors. Drawing in perspective is introduced.
