Bible - Biblical Choices
Fourth grade reviews the heroes of the Old Testament, studies Solomon, prophets of the Old Testament, and the fulfillment of the prophesies. They learn about the beginning of the early Church, the spreading of the Gospel, and the missionary journeys of Paul. These lessons encourage students to trust and obey
God, and be faithful in spreading the Good News.
Language and Reading - Bob Jones University
Students study sentences, parts of speech, dictionary, encyclopedia skills, library skills, the writing process, book reviews, friendly/business letters, essay and poetry writing. They will use study and reference skills. Each reading lesson focuses on one or more reading skills. The workbook teaches structural analysis, study skills, and literature skills.
Math - Bob Jones University
The curriculum promotes an understanding of math concepts through an inductive teaching method, uses concrete manipulatives before abstract math symbols. Topics covered include subtraction and addition facts; place value; time and money; multiplication and division facts; common, mixed, and decimal fractions; measurements, both customary and metric; geometry; plane figures; statistics and graphing; pre-algebra; and group problem solving.
Penmanship
There is daily instruction and practice for penmanship excellence. Students practice correct formation, spacing, letter size, slant and proportion, as well as overall neatness and good appearance.
Spelling - A Beka
Spelling for fourth grade guides students toward better spelling, a richer vocabulary, and an enjoyment of good poetry. They review spelling rules, phonics keys, and dictionary skills. There are weekly spelling lists which include exercises, repetition and tests.
History/Geography - A Beka
The study of the foundation, exploration, and history of the United States is enhanced by colorful maps, photographs, and illustrations. Geography lessons reinforce map skills, and teach the national regions, states, and capitals. In the spring, students visit St. Augustine to study Florida history.
Science - Bob Jones University
The curriculum covers, in part, the study of plants; insects; trees; animals’ defenses; digestion; light; electricity; length, area, and volume; machines; history of the moon, its structure and motion; the Earth’s crust. The science text includes illustrated lessons, experiments, demonstrations, and many hands-on activities.
Computer - University Technology Partnership
Over the course of the year, students are introduced to skill-appropriate
levels of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Publisher, and Power Point. The regular classroom teacher provides projects based on the students’ curriculum, which is then integrated into the four technology programs. All work on the world-wide web and web page design emphasizes internet safety.
Spanish
Bi-weekly classes cover topics including numbers 0-100, commands and expressions, greetings and basic dialogue, plural and gender of nouns, definite articles, possessive adjectives, diminutives, colors, the body, the family, and the alphabet.
Art - A Beka
Fourth graders learn basic art concepts, art techniques, and ways to manipulate and use paper to make unique projects. They use directional coloring, primary color blending to create secondary colors, learn complementary and contrasting colors, freehand drawing, perspective, and shading. The class also uses McGraw
Hill Children’s Publishing to study the lives and works of famous artists such as Monet and Van Gogh, and try to mimic their works.
