Bible - Biblical Choices
We study the heroes of the Old Testament, the Prophecies of Jesus, and the Fulfillment of those prophecies. In addition we dive into the teaching of Paul, and through our textbook we learn about real life missionaries and messengers for God.
Reading - Pages in My Head, Bob Jones University
The curriculum covers modern day fiction, fanciful fiction, science fiction, and historical fiction. Students keep a vocabulary note book and have bi-weekly tests on their vocabulary. We also look at the different types of writing techniques authors use to paint a picture in the reader’s mind through their writing. We also touch on biographical stories, and some non-fiction. As part of reading, we cover three literature readers throughout the year.
Math - Bob Jones University
After a review of place values, the curriculum moves straight into the principles of addition, and multiplication. We do simple and complex division, basic geometry, as well as metric and standard measurements, fractions, decimals, and some students will reach pre-algebra. We constantly review previous learned material and have a weekly review quiz.
Spelling - Bob Jones University
Spelling for fifth grade is challenging, but prepares the students with a wide range of spelling abilities. There are weekly tests including definitions. There is an annual spelling bee, and winners for 5th grade go onto the ACSI regional bee well prepared.
Spanish
Bi-weekly classes cover topics including numbers 0-1000, months and dates, time, sizes, shapes, clothing, frequently used expressions, word gender, plurals, definite and indefinite articles, antonyms, prepositions, subject pronouns, and regular verbs.
History/Geography - Bob Jones University
Class text involves an in depth look at American inventors, involvement in major world conflicts, economy, depression, life styles, culture, how the regions of the U.S. were formed, and the major events through the early 21st century. Students do a project in December on customs and traditions of various countries, which involves a short paper, oral report, and sharing of a cultural food dish. We also go in depth looking at WWI & II.
Science - Bob Jones University
The year begins with health, discussing and learning the parts and functioning of the respiratory and circulatory systems. Students then move on to earth science, chemistry, weather, and electricity. Earth science requires a project in November that includes a rock and mineral report and display. In January/February, Science Fair projects are presented and the report is completed in conjunction with their English chapter on how to do a research report.
Computer - University Training Program
Over the course of the year, students are introduced to skill-appropriate
levels of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Publisher, and Power Point. The regular classroom teacher provides projects based on the students’ curriculum, which is then integrated into the four technology programs. All work on the world-wide web and web page design emphasizes internet safety.
Art - A Beka
Fifth graders implement techniques such as color blending, shading, and the concept of perspective to draw freehand and mimic famous works. They will study famous artists’ such as Van Gogh and Monet, their lives and their paintings. Students will also learn to manipulate and use simple paper to create unique and creative projects.
