Bible - A Beka
Our day begins with Bible. We cover Creation through the Old Testament focusing on the stories of Joseph, Abraham, Elisha, and the Birth of Jesus. We then learn about Jesus’ ministry, the miracles He performed, His disciples, the “Fruits of the Spirit,” and some of Paul’s ministry. We emphasize Jesus’ crucifixion and it’s importance. Children learn about the Trinity, about accepting Jesus as their Savior, and His promise of Heaven when they accept him.
Phonics and Reading - A Beka
Our goal for students is to be able to read a short story by the time they leave K-4. We begin with the building blocks of the 5 vowels and their short sounds, then progress into the consonants and their sounds. Students then learn consonant/vowel blends, and by adding another consonant, they make a word. Children are taught the double consonant rule, the long vowels sounds, and light words (the, I, a). Phonics is the main focus of the first half of the year. After Christmas, we review and begin reading groups.
Language Development
This area is our History/Geography/Science curriculum. The children learn about our presidents, the state they live in, and other countries such as Australia, Israel, and Africa. They learn about people and cultures of these countries as well as the different animals, or unique weather. Pre-K4 works together on an experiment for the school’s annual Science Fair project in January.
Skills Development - A Beka
Throughout the year the children learn their shapes, colors, how to use scissors, and how to develop the small and large motor skills. The children also learn to connect the dots, connect the dots by number, and then color by number.
Math - A Beka
Our goal is to make sure the children know the numbers 1-20. They will be able to recognize the number and its value. They will be able to count to 100 by 5’s and 10’s. Children will also learn number position, which number comes before/after a specific number. At the end of the year we will teach them some simple addition and subtraction.
Handwriting - A Beka
Our goal for each child is to write (print) his/her name and several small words. Children begin by learning how to hold their pencils, enhancing their small motor skills. They progressively learn to write each letter, both capital and little, then write a blend and word.
Spanish
Weekly Spanish classes cover topics including introductions and greetings, colors, numbers 1-10, family, and community. The curriculum uses songs and games.
Art - A Beka
Pre-schoolers have art class once per week with the school art teacher and learn the basics of art and craft concepts. They have the opportunity to enjoy art as they develop the fine motor skills needed to draw, color, cut, paste, and even paint. The monthly projects introduce our students to basic art and craft concepts, and correlate with academics, Bible teaching and the changes of the season.
